Marcus
Marcus, age 12, came into care three years ago; his school called in a report after Marcus had missed 30 days of school. When the investigator arrived at the home, Marcus was found alone being left to care for himself. The condition of the home was found to be unsanitary, and there was no electricity. Marcus was placed in a foster home and a CASA was appointed to his case. Marcus’ mother was later found, hospitalized, for a psychotic break. It was discovered that his mother was diagnosed with Bi Polar disorder, did not take her medication and frequently left Marcus home alone for several days at a time to fend for himself. For 18 months the CASA worked with Marcus and his professional team to determine an appropriate plan for him. Marcus often talked about an older stepbrother who was in the military and lived out of state. The CASA was able to track down this stepbrother who happened to be living in Texas. The CASA coordinate d efforts with the professionals in Texas and Missouri. Three months ago, Marcus was reunited with his stepbrother; ultimately, the home was licensed and Marcus was placed there on a permanent basis. Marcus has enjoyed sending emails to his CASA, relaying information about his new school, his new home, and his new baseball team.
