Brianna
Brianna, age 2, tested positive for cocaine at the time of her birth. Her mother left the hospital without notifying staff or family. Brianna suffered severe withdrawal which required an eight week hospitalization; eventually she was placed in a foster home. A CASA was appointed to Brianna’s case. The CASA volunteer made contacts with hospital staff, relatives and law enforcement and eventually located Brianna’s mother. The CASA was able to encourage the mom to enter a substance abuse treatment facility – one where she was able to stay with Brianna. Now, mom has maintained her sobriety for 12 months, she and Brianna are living together in a supervised living situation; the CASA was able to assist mom in getting full time employment at a local grocery store, and, enroll Brianna in a daycare that can meet her developmental needs.
